Suffering draws us into being aware of what matters most

Most of us deploy monumental efforts to drown out our emotions while in the midst of our day to day lives, but we eventually arrive back at the very emotions that we are trying to avoid. Courageously allowing emotions to be “in motion” through us, we begin to find great understanding. During such heroic effort, we can see the work we get to do for ourselves. If we avoid strong emotions, our sorrows and fears will harden our hearts, making movement and flexibility impossible. Thus we cannot make changes necessary for growth, and we cannot develop wisdom. The weight of grief and suffering is more than we can bear alone. Becoming vulnerable enough to share with another what is on our hearts is powerfully healing to the soul.
